Sustainable Kent

A couple of weeks back, it was Kent Day and it inspired us to share our favourite spots.
For those who didn’t know, Kinshipped’s home is in the Garden of England. Former ‘Londoners’, we left for the countryside, and to be closer to family (my husband partially grew up here). We’re now seeing a new wave of growth in the county, for many reasons, and it’s fast becoming a food and wine hotspot.
Here are some of our favourite places to head:

Gilda Bakery
Tucked away on Court Lodge farm in Bishopsbourne, Gilda prides itself on using locally sourced, organic ingredients, and traditional baking techniques. From their freshly baked bread, made with stoneground flour from nearby mills, to their delicious pastries crafted with seasonal fruits, Gilda Bakery's commitment to sustainability is evident in every product. If you stay at The Pig at Bridge Place, Gilda is just a 20 minute walk, or a 2 minute drive away.

Woolton Farm Glamping, Wine + Kentish Pip
At Woolton Farm, you'll witness the harmonious blend of agriculture and environmental stewardship. This family-run farm has embraced sustainable practices, cultivating their land with utmost care. Besides their dedication to organic farming, Woolton Farm is particularly renowned for their delicious best selling Pet Nat, a natural sparkling wine crafted from biodynamically grown grapes. The Farm is also home to Kentish Pip where you can grab a drink at the barn and sit in a lovely fruit-tree-filled garden in the sun. Very kid friendly too.

Rose and Crown Deal
In the coastal town of Deal, the Rose and Crown effortlessly marries a warm and inviting atmosphere with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. This pub goes beyond the ordinary, sourcing ingredients from local suppliers and championing farm-to-table dining. By supporting regional farmers and reducing their carbon footprint, the Rose and Crown showcases the power of community-focused sustainability. The food is exceptional, and you can stay in one of the rooms above the restaurant.

The Goods Shed
Located next to Canterbury West station, The Goods Shed goes above and beyond in its commitment to sustainability. Not only does it offer a delightful marketplace and restaurant, but it also provides a unique opportunity to shop plastic-free. Here, you can find a wide array of unpackaged, locally sourced products, reducing waste and promoting a more sustainable way of shopping. From fresh produce to artisanal goods, The Goods Shed embodies the ethos of conscious consumerism while supporting local farmers and producers.

Led by a passionate team, this sustainable farm nurtures the land and cares for their animals with reverence. From free-range eggs to pasture-raised meat, Rebel Farmer offers high-quality, ethically produced goods that promote a more sustainable food system. You can explore their practices and discover the true meaning of responsible farming through one of their workshops where you will get the chance to sample edible flowers, showcasing the farm's commitment to diverse and sustainable food options.

Sustainable Vineyards in the Surrounding Area
In addition to the brilliant local businesses mentioned above, the surrounding area of Kent boasts numerous sustainable vineyards that are definitely worth exploring. These vineyards showcase the harmonious relationship between winemaking and environmental stewardship. From Gusbourne and Terlingham to the Simpson Estate, Balfour Winery, Biddenden, and Barnsole, each vineyard embraces sustainable viticulture practices. By prioritising biodiversity, soil health, and natural methods of cultivation, these vineyards produce exceptional wines that reflect the beauty and sustainability of the region.
